Our Story

From Our Family to Your Table

In the heart of Rethymno Old Town, Loggia Taverna has been welcoming guests since 1998 with the flavours our family grew up with.

Our story began long before the first table was served. It began in the family fields, with olive trees, vineyards, vegetables, animals, homemade wine and raki, and the everyday recipes of a Cretan home. Opening the taverna was a natural next step: a way to share our own produce, our family cooking, and the warmth of true Cretan hospitality with people from all over the world.
At the heart of our kitchen is still the mother of the family, cooking traditional recipes passed down from her mother and grandmother. Every dish is prepared with the same care, patience, and respect that turned a family meal into a taverna loved by locals and visitors alike.

Why Loggia

A Real Cretan Welcome

For us, hospitality is not a service. It is something we learned at home. Since 1998, our family has welcomed guests in the heart of Rethymno Old Town with traditional food, warm smiles, and the feeling of sitting at a local table.

Many of our recipes come from previous generations, and many of our ingredients come from our own family production. Simple food, honest flavours, and a place where visitors from every corner of the world can feel at home.

Our menu is built around the food our family knows best: traditional Cretan dishes, slow-cooked meats, homemade classics, fresh vegetables, local wine, and recipes that have been served at our family table for generations.

Some dishes are prepared on special days, some are guest favourites, and others are simply the flavours we grew up with.

Made the traditional way, with our own homemade béchamel and the rich, comforting flavour of a true Greek classic.

A local favourite, slowly cooked with onions, wine, and spices until tender, deep, and full of Cretan character.

Traditional meat dishes cooked with patience and care, bringing the taste of the Cretan countryside to the table.

Moussakas

A real Cretan welcome

We came here for dinner but only one of us wanted food as we were still full after a massive lunch. We had a pizza and some stuffed vine leaves to share, as well as drinks. Although not quite their normal dinner service, they accommodated us just as normal and brought out dessert and their special liqueur for everyone at the end. The location is great, just off a busy area while yet still quiet enough for a pleasant dinner. The food is tasty and the staff are friendly, so would definitely recommend this place.

Best taverna of our trip

The Staff was very friendly. The food and its portions were great. You can sit outside even if it’s raining and enjoy some Greek music in the background. We received a free dessert, what a nice gesture!

Authentic Cretan flavours

Really nice and cozy family owned and run restaurant. Service is great, everything goes along with a genuine smile and good humour. The food is authentic, I personally had the boubouristi and it is one of the better snail dishes I have tasted ever but everything served looks good and tastes better. We even got a complimentary dessert and dessert drink after we had our meals. Great place when u want authentic Greek dishes and or delicious non Greek dishes and a nice table dining experience for everyone.

Family taverna at its best

This is the best food we had in Crete, it’a family business and the service was exceptional with smiley and welcoming staff. They have their own mussel recipe, however, I wanted the classic one and they arranged that for me. They brought me also a small plate of mussels to try their recipe also and it was amazing. It was so nice from them. The lamb was juicy and tender, to good to be truth. It was the dish of the day. Also the price’s are reasonable and the plates are big. I can’t recommend this place enough. We really loved it.

Very good food and a nice atmosphere in the old town part of Rethymno. Authentic local cuisine and nice service.
